L2iQ in OT Roads

Motorways and road tunnels rely on a hidden layer of technology to keep traffic flowing and people safe – control systems, SCADA, CCTV, radio, emergency phones and the networks that connect them all back to a control centre. L2iQ brings that technology together and makes it work as one.

Whether it is a rail corridor or a motorway tunnel, critical transport infrastructure depends on the same thing: operational technology that is properly integrated, thoroughly tested and dependable every hour of the day. That is what we do.

We support road operators, government agencies and major contractors across motorways, tunnels and intelligent transport systems (ITS) – from systems engineering and integration through to verification, testing, commissioning and ongoing maintenance.

Inside a connected road tunnel

A road tunnel is one of the most technology-rich environments on any transport network. Every system has a job to do, and they all need to talk to each other and to the control centre:

01

Optical fibre and WAN

the high-capacity backbone linking the tunnel to the control centre, carrying data, video and alarms in real time.

02

LAN and structured cabling

The local network that connects every device along the length of the tunnel.

03

Control systems and SCADA

Monitor and control tunnel plant such as ventilation, lighting, power and fire systems, giving operators full visibility and control.

04

CCTV cameras

Give operators eyes on every metre of the tunnel and support automatic incident detection.

05

PA system

Broadcasts clear voice instructions to motorists, especially during incidents and evacuations.

06

Wireless voice radio

Radiating cables carry emergency services and operational radio through the tunnel, and let operators break in over AM/FM broadcasts.

07

WI-FI

Wireless data coverage for maintenance crews and connected devices.

08

Voice telephony (help phones)

Emergency phones at regular intervals that connect motorists directly to the control room.

09

Access control and intrusion detection

Keeps plant rooms, cross-passages and equipment cabinets secure and alerts operators to unauthorised entry.

10

OT networks and cyber security

Segmented, monitored networks and controlled remote access that protect tunnel and traffic systems from cyber threats.

Secure by design

Major road networks are part of the transport sector covered by the SOCI Act. As traffic and tunnel systems become more connected, a cyber incident is no longer just an IT problem – it can affect safety on the road. We design and integrate operational technology with security built in from the start, helping operators manage cyber risk across their networks and meet their SOCI obligations.

Where roads and rail meet

Some of the most complex integration happens where road and rail share the same space. On Canberra Light Rail, L2iQ helped deliver an Australian-first traffic priority system, integrating the light rail with SCATS – the traffic signal control system used across Australian cities. Light rail vehicles get priority at intersections while traffic on the surrounding roads keeps moving safely.
