ARTC — Electrical & Earthing Design

The Challenge

ARTC was developing a new greenfield Wayside Monitoring Location at Korunye (53.50 km) on the East–West rail line between Two Wells and Mallala, South Australia. The site required new wayside monitoring equipment, an equipment building and a dedicated mains power supply.

The installation included a Hot Bearing Detector / Hot Wheel Detector (HBD/HWD) wayside system. L2iQ was required to develop an integrated electrical power supply and earthing solution covering the mains connection, earth grid and electrical fit-out of the new wayside equipment building.

The L2iQ Solution

L2iQ commenced the engineering process with on-site soil and earth resistivity testing to establish the site conditions required for the earthing design. The results were incorporated into the electrical and earthing engineering package, providing a documented basis for the proposed installation.

The design package was developed to support both procurement and construction, with detailed engineering drawings prepared for market engagement, tendering and subsequent installation of the electrical system and earth grid.

L2iQ also provided recommendations relating to the network and radio communications requirements to support potential rollout of the solution across future Wayside locations.

What L2iQ Delivered

  • On-site soil and earth resistivity testing to establish design inputs for the earthing system.
  • Electrical power supply and earthing design engineering.
  • Formal Electrical and Earthing Design Report.
  • Detailed engineering drawings suitable for market engagement, tendering and construction.
  • Network and radio communications recommendations to support future Wayside site deployments.

Project Outcome

L2iQ successfully delivered the Electrical and Earthing Design package to enable ARTC to progress the project to market and commence construction planning. The completed engineering package provided a structured foundation for delivery of the electrical infrastructure and earthing system.

The project also positioned L2iQ to support subsequent stages of the program, including potential construction delivery and communications packages, subject to ARTC requirements.

Business Development Value

This project demonstrates L2iQ’s capability to deliver practical electrical and earthing engineering for critical rail infrastructure, from site investigation and engineering design through to tender-ready documentation. Importantly, the design approach was developed with scalability in mind, supporting a consistent methodology that can be applied to future Wayside Monitoring Locations.
