Parramatta Light Rail — Stage 1

The Challenge

The Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1 project, between Westmead and Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD and Camellia, required physical installation of all rail systems across the new network prior to dynamic testing and passenger service commencement. This included achieving demanding intersection performance targets, requiring complex configuration and coordination with road traffic management systems across a heavily urbanised Parramatta corridor.

The Solution

L2iQ managed operational readiness and system performance validation for the Stage 1 network, and physically deployed all rail systems. A major focus was the development and execution of an intersection optimisation strategy — including SCATS-based intersection configuration and priority levels — achieving significant journey time reductions through signal and system tuning that balanced light rail performance with road traffic impacts.

What L2iQ Delivered

  • Installation of all rail systems including signalling, communications, radio and passenger information systems for PLR Stage 1
  • Intersection optimisation strategy delivering over 30% reduction in journey times through signal and system tuning
  • Chaired technical working groups for rail systems testing and intersection commissioning
  • Operational readiness assessments and coordination of rail systems testing and commissioning
  • SCATS configuration and intersection priority level setting across the PLR1 network

The Outcome

Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1 achieved successful passenger service commencement with all rail systems installed and commissioned. The intersection optimisation strategy delivered over 30% reduction in journey times, demonstrating L2iQ’s expertise in operational integration, readiness management and rail systems assurance for complex urban light rail projects.
