The Challenge
The delivery of Canberra’s inaugural light rail line required end-to-end systems integration and technology architecture capability. The Gungahlin to Alinga corridor needed to achieve demanding journey time targets while integrating with Canberra’s existing road traffic management systems — requiring sophisticated signal priority design and SCATS integration across a complex urban corridor that had not previously hosted light rail.
The Solution
L2iQ delivered the systems integration and technology architecture for Canberra Light Rail Stage 1, encompassing overall systems design across signalling, SCADA, passenger systems and communications. A key achievement was the design and integration of road and rail traffic signalling with control and priority systems via SCATS, meeting both journey time and road traffic impact targets while coordinating a complex T&C programme across multiple vendors, civil and electrical contractors, and the operator.
What L2iQ Delivered
- Overall systems architecture and design across signalling, SCADA, passenger systems and communications networks
- Road and rail traffic signalling integration with SCATS for priority and control across the corridor
- Achievement of journey time targets and road traffic impact targets through signal integration
- T&C coordination between design leads, technology vendors, civil and electrical contractors and the operator
- System certification and operational readiness for Canberra’s inaugural passenger service
The Outcome
Canberra’s inaugural light rail line was successfully delivered to operational readiness, with journey time and road traffic impact targets achieved through L2iQ’s systems integration and SCATS signal priority design. This engagement established L2iQ’s deep operational knowledge of the Canberra light rail ecosystem — including local regulatory and technical governance frameworks — which directly informs its ongoing delivery of Stages 2A and 2B.
